Yosemite Heritage Holidays at The Ahwahnee
Plan for next year! There will be TWO sessions of Heritage Holidays in 2009: March 1-3, and March 4-5. Look for flyers at this year’s event, and remember – the earlier you order, the less expensive the price – AND the more likely you’ll get in! The 2007 event sold out in November, so don't hesitate.

For more event information, see the official Yosemite site: www.yosemitepark.com/heritage
(The latest Program Schedule is on the Yosemite site.).

The Fresno Bee was at the Ahwahnee for the Grand Ball on March 4. Full story (three pages with pix!) on their website:

Immortalize yourself in your 1920s costumes in a documentary

Berkeley,
Tuesday, April 15

Special to ADSC: "I am making a documentary on gay and lesbian participation in the Harlem Renaissance. Part of that documentary will be a “reenactment” of the famous drag balls that were a yearly event at Rockland Palace, a Harlem ballroom, during the late 20s and early 30s. I want to shoot YOU in costume and in silhouette (that finesses the race issue and insures your anonymity) making gestures to the accompanying voice-over dialogue. No acting experience required. All you need to do is show up in a costume (preferably 2) that would look good in silhouette. (I know this will be harder for the men than for the women, but I’m sure there are some cool hats out there.) Also, I’d like to have a couple or two couples that can do some dances of the period.

"The first shoot will take place in a studio at Berkeley City College in downtown Berkeley. I have the studio scheduled from 12:00 to 5:00 on Tuesday, April 15. I know this is a work day, and if you can’t make the date, I’ll do a second shoot for those of you who want to participate at another time.

"I need however many men and women as are willing to participate. Please call me, Robert Philipson, at 510-531-0512. Leave a message if I don’t answer, and I will call you back. Or you can write me at rmphilipson@yahoo.com. No money, naturally, as this is a no-budget project, but you will get fed (that’s part of the rules of film production on any shoot), and it should be fun! Particularly interesting if you’ve never participated in a film shoot."

Playing through April 13:
Like a Romberg operetta crossed with a zany Marx Brothers farce, The Student Gypsy is Rick Besoyan’s 1963 follow-up to his smash-hit operetta-spoof, Little Mary Sunshine. The NY Daily News hailed it as “fresh, delightfully tuneful, and achingly funny!”

In turn-of-the-century Singspielia, charmingly myopic Merry May Glockenspiel is abducted by a band of gypsies. The gypsy queen, Zampa, harbors a mysterious secret involving the true identity of the Prince of neighboring Liederkranz. The songs include Romance, Gypsy of Love, and the daffy bell-ringing number Ting-a-Ling Dearie.

The Hing Hing Coffee Shop (now called Thai Noodles) is a gem of a tiny deco restaurant that has been remodeled over the years but still retains much deco style.

DECO FILM NEWS -- More on our new Bay Area Cinema page

SAT APRIL 12
JAZZ + SILENT FILM FESTIVAL

at the Castro Theater

A Bay Area cultural institution, the Club Foot Orchestra was born in San Francisco 25years ago—the creation of composer-performer-instrument builder Richard Marriott. The band made its live silent film debut in 1987 at the Mill Valley Film Festival, performing Marriott's original score for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Since then the group has defined the modern arts of scoring and live accompaniment of silent films.

For the day-long Jazz + Silent Film Festival, Club Foot performs original scores to three classic films:

3p: Sherlock Jr.
Time Magazine’ named Sherlock, Jr. (1924) one if its “All-Time Top 100 Movies,” calling the Buster Keaton classic “a great example of American minimalism—simple objects and movement manipulated in casually complex ways to generate a steadily rising gale of laughter. The whole thing is only 45 minutes long, not a second of which is wasted.”

7p: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
A major influence on early horror films and film noir, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) is one of the landmarks of German Expressionist cinema. “It was and remains a very frightening movie,” writes TV Guide, “from the aghast faces in the very first shot to the final chilling irony. Nothing is more horrifying than insanity, and virtually every major character in the film is insane.”

9p: Nosferatu
“To watch F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu (1922) is to see the vampire movie before it had really seen itself,” writes Roger Ebert. “Here is the story of Dracula before it was buried alive in clichés, jokes, TV skits, cartoons and more than 30other films. The film is in awe of its material. It seems to really believe in vampires.”

Tickets for all shows available at sfjazz.org or at 866-920-JAZZ.

Nick Langdon presents An Evening with John Barrymore
"20th Century"

Friday April 18th

Towe Auto Museum

Sacramento, CA

1934 Classic Film: John Barrymore in "20th Century", Towe Auto
Museum, Sacramento, Friday April 18, 2008 7pm $10

http://www.toweautomuseum.org/html/classic_movies.html

John Barrymore was mostly known for his great dramatic roles and his
famous profile, but on rare occasions he was given the chance to do
comedy. In TWENTIETH CENTURY Barrymore shines as hammy stage director
Oscar Jaffe, guiding the career of one Mildred Plotka (Carole
Lombard) whom he's plucked from the ranks to be a star. Trouble
ensues when Plotka changes her name to Lily Garland and bolts to
Hollywood to make movies. The two meet by accident on the Twentieth
Century Limited and Jaffe pulls out all the stops to lure the former
Mildred Plotka back to the stage! Directed by Howard Hawks, this 1934
Columbia picture is one of the earliest of the "Screwball" comedy
genre.

Hear Dave Moreno on the mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ, followed by a
prologue featuring Producer/Host Nick Langdon and Rebecca Kane.
